Beautiful All-White Cake Smash in Abilene TX | Abilene TX Family Photographer

Feeling pretty bad about this blog right here. This is one of my all-time favorite shoots and I didn’t even write about it - it’s been almost a year! Shame, shame, SHAME!

If my friend Brooke is good at one thing in particular, it’s definitely creating an elaborate cake smash with me. A few short years ago, we designed an Alice in Wonderland cake smash for her first daughter. I was pretty bad at blogging back then, otherwise I’d link the gallery here. Instead, I’ll show you one of the pictures:

Fun fact, this particular picture above has been pinned on Pinterest over 6,000 times!

So when she contacted me last year about baby sister Madelyn’s birthday at the beginning of December, I was all for it. As her first birthday party was going to be winter themed, it would be appropriate to design the smash session in the same fashion. Almost immediately we were both thinking very white, crisp, and clean.

I bought some props at Hobby Lobby and Kirkland’s, and used a clean white paper backdrop. Honestly, it’s the easiest way to do a cake smash and you can just cut off the dirty part, fold it up, and chuck it in the trash! Brooke also purchased multiple props as she was going to be designing the birthday party. The most gorgeous piece of the cake smash was the dream catcher - she found that on Etsy and I still can’t get enough of it.

That morning we probably spent about an hour putting the set together and I while I cannot remember the exact details now, I’m almost positive we both squealed at how it turned out. Lights, sparkle, snow, shimmer, glitter - it’s was quite literally the smash we both had envisioned but even a little better than that.

Madelyn was dressed in the cutest outfit and was seated to take some pictures before we got messy. She is such a sweet, quiet child (at least with me) and she was a little hesitant about me and the camera. I did coax out some grins from her (I’m sure her big sister Scout no doubt helped with this). Uh oh, then the gorgeous cake came out. If you’re like me, you would have dived in immediately, right? Not Madelyn. At first she was all, “what the heck is this?!” And then when she touched it and noticed the frosting stayed on her hand, game over! She did not enjoy the smash after that. Of course, I was there to catch the tears on camera but Dad came to her rescue to cheer her up. Sometimes, smashes end up like this, but that’s ok! Every baby is different and your photographer will still get great images of them 9 times out of 10.

Enjoy Madelyn’s full gallery here. Elaborate cake smashes require a lot of planning and a good vision but they are SO worth it. If you’d like to collaborate with me on a designer set like these, contact me here!
